Control of corrosion in oil and gas production tubing

چکیده

L. SMITH Controlling corrosion in production tubing is essential for maintaining production and for preventing loss of well control. Materials for use downhole have to meet criteria for corrosion resistance and also mechanical requirements. The potential corrosion rate can be estimated and the risks of sulphide stress corrosion cracking assessed on the basis of the anticipated environmental conditions and flow regime. Material options for tubing can then be consid ered on the basis of published corrosion test data and also field experience. Candidate materials may be tested under the precise f eld conditions expected in order to ensure that overconservative choices are not made. Corrosion inhibitors, coated carbon steel, and fibre reinforced plastic tubing have temperature, flow regime, and mechanical limitations. Specific corrosion resistant alloys (CRAB) have environmental limitations with respect to temper ature, hydrogen sulphide, and chloride content. Details of field experience with all of these material options are given. There exists a large amount of experience with CRAB for downhole applications. Correctly selected CRAB have a good track record of service, even for hostile, HS containing conditions. There are a few limited examples of CRA clad tubing. This product may be one that needs re-evaluation as it offers potential for economic use of costly but effective CRAB. The author is with Intetech Ltd, 37 Mount Way, Waverton, Chester CH3 7QF. Beyond the Limitations of API RP-14E Erosional Velocity -A Field Study for Gas Condensate Wells

Fluid velocity has the potential to cause severe erosion damage to oil & gas production infrastructure. In order to avoid or alleviate damage due to erosion, the American Petroleum Institute Recommended Practice (API RP) 14E recommends a threshold fluid velocity for production tubing and pipelines. However, field and laboratory data have proven that the applied empirical constants, known as C-f...

Oil well stimulation, usually done with hot solutions of hydrochloric acid, may induce severe corrosion attack on production tubing, downhole tools and casing

Oil well stimulation, usually done with hot solutions of hydrochloric acid, may induce severe corrosion attack on production tubing, downhole tools and casing. Inorganic, organic and combinations of acids along with surfactants are used in a variety of well stimulation treatments. To reduce the aggressive attack of the acid on tubing and casing materials (N80 steel), inhibitors are added to the...

AN INVESTIGATION ON THE PERFORMANCE OF AN IMIDAZOLINE BASED COMMERCIAL CORROSION INHIBITOR ON CO2 CORROSION OF GAS-WELL TUBING STEEL BY EIS TECHNIQUE

Abstract: The performance of an Imidazoline based commercial corrosion inhibitor in CO2 corrosion of a gas-well tubing steel was studied by employing Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) technique. Inhibitor performance was investigated by means of its efficiency at various concentration and also its behavior at various exposure time. EIS results showed that inhibitor interaction to...

Effect of Elemental Sulfur and Sulfide on the Corrosion Behavior of Cr-Mo Low Alloy Steel for Tubing and Tubular Components in Oil and Gas Industry

The chemical degradation of alloy components in sulfur-containing environments is a major concern in oil and gas production. This paper discusses the effect of elemental sulfur and its simplest anion, sulfide, on the corrosion of Cr-Mo alloy steel at pH 2 and 5 during 10, 20 and 30 h immersion in two different solutions. 4130 Cr-Mo alloy steel is widely used as tubing and tubular components in ...
